It's been a year since Michael Riley was stranded in this world. A year of changes and shocks and repercussions that are still reverberating through the known lands. New technologies are emerging; new tools of production and destruction are being constructed; new schools of thought and learning; new ways of doing things; new possibilities…

Countries that have brooded though uneasy peace for decades are stirring and starting to take a closer look at these possibilities and this stranger in their midst, and what they see both intrigue and disturb them. Questions are being asked, demands are being made, and old alliances are being tested.

At the sharp end of this Michael is still trying to survive. Sent on a diplomatic trip as a peace offering to a neighboring ally he finds the balance of power in an alien world wasn't quite as he had expected. When things start to spiral out of control he finds his limits tested as he fights to stay alive, find out who his friends really are, and prove he isn't a threat to the entire known world. But his biggest problem seems to be that it's the good guys who want him dead.

Storms Over Open Fields Life of Riley Book 2 eBook G Howell

Once again, a thoroughly riveting addition to the wonderful first book, "Light on Shattered Water," that I enjoyed so much. G. Howell continues to broaden his reach into the world he has created and deepens the reader's sense of this alien world and culture. What was the most disturbing here (and I mean that in the most positive way possible) was that the more I learned and understood about the Rris, the more unspeakably alien they seemed. I had the most incredible feeling of loneliness that kept growing along with the main character. It was as if we were both trapped in an entire world filled with beings so profoundly "other" that our very humanness was in peril. These are chilling books that thoroughly entertain you while you read them and then profoundly inhabit your mind for weeks afterword. I mean that to be read as the highest praise that I can give them.

Storms Over Open Fields Life of Riley Book 2 eBook G Howell Reviews

Good read. At times I feel like the mc is more akin to the Predator multiplied by Arnold Schwarzenegger, but even that is fun and justified in the book.
Michael Riley has all kinds of luck, most of it bad but just enough good to keep him alive----maybe. Alien mindsets alien laws, how can one lone human survive when even the Mediators of the Peace want to execute him just for existing? Deception, assassination, and political intrigue, and aliens. What more could you ask for!
I've been following this author for years and have read "Light on Shattered Water" and "Storm over Open Field" several times now. The universe Howell creates is incredibly rich and detailed, and he manages very well to stay true to the rules of the universe he creates. Pain, sorrow, despair, joy and love are all very real in his epic story. This is one of the few books that left me wanting more after over 600 pages.

Read it if you're into fantasy. I enjoyed it very much - again, and again!
I recall having read The Human Memoirs, Light on Shattered Water, and Storms Over Open Fields as they were being written many years ago. The instant I saw that these were available for purchase, I snapped them right up. They're a bit rough in parts (rough as in brutal, as well as sometimes rough as in needs an edit pass), but they're fantastic stranger-in-a-strange-land fantasy that I've had an absolute blast reading and rereading.

In short, a human finds himself alone in a world where humans never evolved, among a bunch of creatures just entering the gunpowder and steam power era. He's an alien and a monster to these people, but he happens to have information that can jump-start their entire economy by hundreds of years.

Well worth it. Excellent read. Can't wait for Lies in Red Leaves.
This is the second book in the life of Riley Trilogy, (so far it's a trilogy anyways), and it isn't your typical boring filler story or cliffhanger in any way. In the first book of the series, Light on Shattered Water, character introductions were made and we saw some of the life of Rris, where Mr. Howell showed off his fantastic ability to create an alien way of thinking and society. In this second book, he goes more into more depth on how Rris think and how their downright strange society works, sometimes to the detriment of those who are ignorant of it! There are some incredible plot twists in this novel, and not cheesy ones either! You wont see them coming and you wont be able to put this book down, it gives you food for thought while you're reading it! I can't recommend this series enough, I can't wait for the third book to finish!
Storms Over Open Fields is the second book in the 'Life of Riley' series by Greg Howell. It starts off simply enough In the time since the end of Light on Shattered Water, our protagonist Michael Riley has not only survived, but is now thriving as an upstart member of the nouveau riche within Rris society. For reasons of good business and even better politics, he and a group of companions travel to the capital of nearby friendly country. Things proceed well enough until Michael unexpectedly meets an old friend. From that point, the rest of the novel is a fever dream of paranoia, betrayal, doubt and a painful re-education about nearly everything Michael assumed he 'knew' about the Rris.

In Light on Shattered Water, the reader is introduced to the Rris, the alien dominant species of a parallel Earth that Michael Riley has found himself immersed in. In Storms Over Open Fields, the author more deeply explores the Rris and their world. They have very different viewpoints and perspectives than homo sapiens and this is more fully fleshed out in this book. Their ideas of a 'natural' balance to the individual, society and progress has gone in directions that no human would consider. It is these differences that now have become matters of life and death for the protagonist.

The author has constructed a rich and complex story for a mature reader to delve into. In many places, the mood of the story is a mix somewhere between a Cold War spy thriller and the nightmares of Franz Kafka. I believe that Storms Over Open Fields is an engaging and worthy successor to Light on Shattered Water and is an overall good read. One hopes for the further published adventures of Michael Riley and the Rris to be forthcoming.
Rich in detail and visual description. Excellent characterizations also. Recommend this highly. My only two comments of a less glowing nature would be regarding the proof-reading, or perhaps lack of it. There are a lot of grammatical oversights and probably typos that have not been caught before publication. Many of them are minor ones that you can easily see what had been intended, while others leave you reading the line several times trying to figure out the intent. Still, even with those, the work is well worth the 5 star rating.

I appreciate how well the author does point out the differences in the thought processes and emotional reactions between humans and Rris, but at times it seemed belabored to the point of redundancy...again, minor considerations in the face of a great story.

I'm anxious to read more in the life of Mikah )
